Cefalù

The town of Cefalù, which is part of the Madonie Park, is included in the club of "The most beautiful villages in Italy", the association of small Italian towns that stand out for their great artistic, cultural and historical importance, for the harmony of the urban fabric, liveability and services to inhabitants. Cefalù is also part of the network of solidarity municipalities.

The Cathedral of the town, included in Arab-Norman Palermo site and the Cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale in 2015 was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO

Cefalù, in its medieval core, is located under the the Fortress (La Rocca) that dominates Cefalù and, along with The Cathedral , characterizes its profile so much as to make the panorama typical and very recognizable. Outside the boundaries of the historic center, the urban nucleus spanned the small flat area that separates the fortress from the rest of the hilly system of the coast, further expanding halfway up the slopes of the hills along the coast. The municipality of Cefalù occupies an area of 65.80 km² on the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily, 70 km east of Palermo and 160 km west of Messina; located almost exactly in the middle of the coast that goes from Trapani to Messina in the north of Sicily. The coast of Cefalù extends for about 30 km between Lascari and Pollina and alternates long stretches of straight beach with bays and small coves of both sandy and rocky nature, with low rocks or even high ridges overlooking the sea. The coast undergoes erosion from wave motion both on the sandy stretches, such as the well-known beach of the town, and on the rocky ridges of a quartz-sandstone nature. Some areas such as the old port (in the historic center) and the new port are instead subject to the opposite phenomenon, sedimentation due to the debris carried by the rivers that descend from the Rocca and from the hills close to the coast To combat erosion over the years, coastal defense works have been prepared, such as the breakwater barriers, in the Kalura and Mazzaforno areas.

In the 4th century the Greeks gave the indigenous center the name of Kefaloidion (from Greek kefa o kefalé, meaning head, cape), probably referring to its promontory.

Our holiday apartment is located in the Santa Lucia district, in the street bearing the same name of the pretty little church in the area, within the Club Med property. The district has now become a reference point for tourists, thanks also to the 'Hotel and Gran Caffé Santa Lucia' and the increasingly massive presence of luxury villas and residences in the area. From the Santa Lucia district the sea can be reached on foot in a few minutes, the center of Cefalù is 5 minutes away by car.
